Medical Microdermabrasion/Chemical Peels Microdermabrasion/Chemical Peels

Aging is multifactorial and often is the consequence of a number of processes occurring over extended periods of time. The basic biological changes are twofold:

  1. As your skin ages your epidermis thickens. Your epidermis is your body’s natural protection against infections and is made up of dead cells packed very tightly acting as a barrier to the outside world. As you grow older, this barrier or wall thickens and becomes less permeable, which means that nutrients contained in cosmeceuticals have a difficult time “passing through” the wall to nourish the dermis (maybe as little as 10% of product applied to your skin actually reaches the dermis to fulfill its function). Different technologies have been developed to ensure better product penetration through your epidermis:

    1. Microdermabrasion uses fine crystals sprayed unto the skin that remove the outer dead cells layers (it can be compared to micro sandblasting). As cells are exfoliated, your wall becomes thinner and more product can pass through it. A series of 6 to 8 treatments, at 1 week intervals, are recommended for optimal results.

    2. Chemical peels dissolve the bonds between cells, making the wall more porous, further increasing product intake by the dermis. These are great additions to microdermabrasion and can be performed in the same session. A specific chemical peel will be chosen depending on your skin’s balance (oiliness, etc) to also help balancing its pH (acidity).

  2. While your epidermis thickens, your dermis, on the other hand, thins. The reason it thins is that, as you get older, your body can not replenish the collagen that is being lost fast enough. Dermal thinning has 2 significant consequences:

Any superficial structure (small blood vessel, abnormal pigmentation) will gradually become increasingly visible. Redness (flushing, rosacea) is generally due to genetic predisposition but skin aging will make it increasingly more visible. Pigment irregularities (age spots, liver spots) are often the result of sun damage that occurred years ago, but your skin thinning makes it more visible with every month and year that passes.
